Harriet Tubman & the Songs of Freedom May 20 Acclaimed jazz musician Marcus Shelby performs original music inspired by Harriet Tubman’s life with a performance May 20 at 7pm at Layton’s Chance Winery in Vienna, MD. He also performed to rave reviews as part of the Tubman Centennial in 2013. DETAILS Tubman Conference draws scholars, 'Underground' star, and more May 18-21  The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Conference will be held in Cambridge, Maryland (a few miles from where Harriet Tubman lived) May 18-21. The event will explore all aspects of the Underground Railroad in borderlands — both literal and figurative. For scholars, site stewards, researchers, student artists, and enthusiasts from across the nation. HIGHLIGHT: Actress Aisha Hinds and the creators of the WGN hit TV show “Underground” will present a session at the conference. DETAILS Winery creates wine honoring Tubman Just released! Our local vineyard and winery, Layton's Chance Vineyard & Winery has created "Freedom," an off-dry blended red wine from grapes that were native to the area during the Harriet Tubman era. $5 from every sale goes to the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center. Pick up a bottle at the winery in Vienna, MD -- just a few miles from Tubman once lived.  Celebrate what's new at the Dorchester Visitor Center May 8 Help us kick off a new tourist season on Monday, May 8 from 5:30 to 7pm at the Dorchester Visitor Center. The event will celebrate the new Welcome Sign created by Cambridge Architectural using revolutionary technology, the new “Ode to Watermen” mural created by local artist Michael Rosato, and the visitor center’s recent facelift that included replacement of the elevated walkway and fresh paint. Schedule is always changing; check the latest.  Free Movie Night - May 5: Bring the family for the animated movie "Sing" outside on the waterfront. Bird Walk May 21: Join an expert birder for a bird watching trip through Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. No experience needed. At the Sail: Waterfront Concert with Blackwater May 26: Local favorites Blackwater performs on the waterfront during this free, family-friendly concert. 200 U.S. flags from the Flags for Heroes program will provide a spectacular backdrop. Friday Night Live Comedy Series May 26: Amateur comedians will take part in an open mic challenge where the audience vote helps determine the winner.
