“Bike the Underground Railroad To Bring Harriet Home”
In the fall of 2020, a beautiful statue of Harriet
Tubman stood outside the County Courthouse for just one month. Now, there
is a community fundraising movement to commission a permanent statue to be
installed specifically for Dorchester County by the same Emmy and Academy-award
winning sculptor, Wesley Wofford, who also designed the traveling monument.
As part of this fundraising effort, we are organizing
a bike ride on October 16, 2021 that will follow part of the
Underground Railroad (UGRR) on two routes (25 miles and 43 miles) through
scenic marsh and farmlands, with rest stops at historic sites. More
information can be found at biketheugrr.com. All the funds will go toward
commissioning, purchasing, and permanently installing a bronze statue of
Harriet Tubman outside our newly refurbished courthouse.
